I had been a landscape painter for over twenty years, when one day I picked a beautiful rose from my garden and held it up against the sun. I discovered a depth of hidden colors and myriad hues which were not visible when the sun's rays were focused on the front of the flower. Viewed the same way, the intricate structure of an Iris, a Peony, and every other flower instantly challenged me to try to replicate those exquisite characteristics in over-size floral portraiture. That would become my passion for the ensuing 20 years.

I prayerfully plan each painting, with my primary purpose being to create an image which will do justice to some of God's most beautiful creations. At the same time I hope that people will feel a sense of peace and tranquility as their eyes roam over the petals, discovering little nuances of color and structure. Much like looking at a beautiful landscape.

My technique is that of the "Old Masters". Under-paintings of what they called "Optical Greys", and building on those, with multiple layers of glaze until the desired depth of color is achieved. It is a very time-consuming process, but the end result is worth it, I believe, and I hope that you will agree.
