Meet the Artist: Alida

Margaret Alida Smith has been an active artist for over thirty-five years; with the past fifteen years devoted exclusively to her award-winning florals. Her classic technique, involving brilliant underpaintings, and myriad layers of glazes has proven to be especially affective in achieving the depth, transparency, and luminosity which distinguish her flowers.

Education:

Studied for three years with Danish teacher, Chris Borggren, who taught the techniques of the "Old Masters", which Alida has continued to research and develop into what has become her own unique approach to floral portraiture.

Exhibitions:

Has been exhibiting since 1982, including her own one-woman show, and two and three women shows. Her paintings have been included in three prestigious Society of Western Artists annual shows, a Women Artists of the West annual show, Oil Painters of America’s National Exhibit, (Carmel, Ca.) The American Artist’s Professional League’s Grand National Exhibit in New York City, and several San Carlos Fine Arts Assoc.’s exhibits. etc. Her paintings hang in private collections throughout the United States.

American Artist’s Professional League, Oil Painters of America, San Carlos Fine Arts Assoc., Signiture member of the Society of Western Artists.

Awards and Honors:

Many first-place awards in various competitions since 1982. In the spring of 1998, one of her Peony paintings was featured in North Light Publisher’s book, THE BEST OF FLOWER PAINTING--No 1, distributed internationally.

In 2007, two of her paintings were published in Kennedy Publishing's new book, THE BEST OF AMERICAN OIL ARTISTS AND ARTISANS. VOL. 1.

Quality of Work:

All of Alida’s paintings are executed with highest quality oils, on Belgian Portrait Linen canvas, and using a process which guarantees that her paintings will endure for generations.

Most paintings are custom-framed to enhance and compliment the subject.
